Opening Malacañang To All

The serial monopoly of mainstream media is coming to an end. The Malacañang Press Corps (MPC) has laid claim and filtered the news and information coming from the palace for far too long. It is time to let the president have a direct access to the people beyond the style and substance that the MPC deems fit to share with the rest of the Filipinos. Social media and blogs will be that link.

The series of events that have fortunately led to this possibility is as follows:

1) Sec Andanar recommends bloggers to the MPC. 2) MPC declines. 3) President invites bloggers for a meet and greet at the palace.

The prequel to this is Pia Rañada Robles joins the MPC.

How does Rappler's point person in Malacañang lead to bloggers getting equity to information and news from the palace?

Simple. Rappler is a news and opinion editorial blog. It was never a part of any journalists union or organization. It is not registered in the SEC as a news or media corporation. And, its journalists do not practice research, balance and context in its articles. For all intents and purposes, the MPC has always had a blogger in its corps.

The question now is, why should Rappler be the only blog with access to Malacañang?

The answer? It shouldn't. So we will wait for either the dissolution of the MPC or the integration of bloggers into it.
