Beyond Death Penalty as a Deterrent

What Ms. Hontiveros is missing, and what a whole lot of people are missing in the argument about the death penalty is the sense of justice, the innate human sense of balance and retribution, that a community or society feels when a horrible crime is committed against it. Some crimes are so heinous that justice demands the ultimate sentence.

In the same way, the penal system does not only exist to rehabilitate criminals, it is also there for justice and punishment and to separate dangerous individuals from society.

Parang nakalimutan ni Ms. Hontiveros ang philosophy classes niya sa Ateneo.

People who debate this have to ask why in Asia, countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan have the death penalty.

Hindi sana puro pusong mamon, kundi objective reasoning ang gamitin.
