A Call for Equanimity
As we inch closer to February 25, I suspect the differences between the supporters of this administration and those who oppose it will grow more polarized; and our engagements with each other, more livid and rancorous.
Might I remind people of either side to keep in mind at all times that we are one nation with perhaps opposing views as to how best to move this country forward. If and when we should argue, kindly argue on the merits or demerits of the case, policy or program.
I have witnessed many of us getting carried away by our emotions. I, too, am very guilty of this. Occasionally have I dismissed a program on account of my dislike of the Liberal Party. It is a struggle but I have to constantly remind myself that a bill sponsored by a Liberal Party lawmaker is neither necessarily nor automatically bad.
A bill's merit is not contingent on the character of the person sponsoring it.
Conversely, the same can be said of the many programs of this government. Please. Please do not dismiss the programs of Secretaries Piñol and Taguiwalo simply out of your disdain for Duterte. Remember, if you kill a program you do not win.
But you make a whole nation that could otherwise have benefited from it -- lose.
And lose big time, it will.
Intelligence respects intelligence even if they oftentimes compete with each other. Let us all aim to conduct our online discussion intelligently. And maybe, just maybe, we will learn to respect each other's differences.
We are, after all, one nation, one people.
