A Majority Under Siege

What yesterday's activity showed was a truth we always suspected. That for months, since the election results came out, it is the majority that has been under siege. Under attack for electing Rodrigo Duterte and for defending him in the onslaught of negative publicity redolent with the memories of the ouster of other presidents.

And the roar of the crowd at Quirino grandstand was the sound of a thirty year old narrative splintering under the collective anger of a people long put upon, long suffering.

At EDSA in 1986 the cry was to end the dictatorship of Marcos. Yesterday the cry was an end to the oligarchic stranglehold of Philippine politics.

Yet the old days will not go quietly. They will fight it, as they have been doing. Tarnish it with their fantasies of self worship. And continue to attempt put on the citizenry an imposition of their leadership. Let the dissenters be damned.

And that is where we find ourselves today. A majority that needs to defend it's choices, kept from their obligation to check its own government, busy with defending it from encroachments of a selfish few. The world has indeed changed from those times when the few respected the many.

We soldier on though. Yesterday's show of force was a small one but enough to discourage the ones who seek to usurp power. Again. Next time if the need is great, there will be more bodies. And it won't be a party.
