EDSA is a Memory

We commemorate the birthdays of Rizal and Bonifacio. We remember their heroic contribution to the Philippines. But we do not troop to Luneta and Caloocan every year.

There is dignity in quiet remembrance without causing traffic jams.

EDSA should live on as a momentous upheaval in our nation's history. It should not be used by the ruling elite as a memory to be exploited over and over to further their hold on power.

EDSA may have been the culmination of a people's anger towards a despot but you have long since replaced its true spirit with the ghost of greed.

The Filipinos switched out an autocracy for a plutocracy. And they have borne the steep cost of that tragic switch ever since.

Remember these lines by Alexander Theroux,

"The very nature of time passing is sad beyond words. Memories mean that they're gone."

In that vein, EDSA is a memory.
