The Spirit of EDSA is in Luneta
EDSA was a success, EDSA was a failure. We won our freedom from dictatorship, but we also lost our way in that vast terrain of freedom. In gaining our freedom, we lost our discipline and focus.
With the myriad of choices, we chose the path that was easy and familiar, and lost sight of our goals and ambitions. Like a premature birth, we were left to tackle the hard problems with weak leadership, a system that is incompatible with our situation as a developiuing country, and an unwieldy constitution. The problems are a crushing rebellion, widespread poverty, a cultural sickness that perpetuates impunity, corruption, loyalty to self and family above all.
How long do you flog a dead horse insisting it can take you to where you want to go? We need drastic reforms but there are those who insist on the status quo.
What we should remember, and what is still true, is the spirit of EDSA was that of revolution, not evolution. It was for throwing out an old order. It was the belief that we can do better, and that we are not afraid to try and reach for these aspirations.
Between the two crowds that gathered in Metro Manila, I believe that the spirit of revolution, of collective aspiration, and of defending the voice of the people is in Luneta.
